I was given a gift of a one day refresher course with Mike Hay Photography … and what a wonderful day it was. I had been a keen photographer 40+ years ago but life, kids and work got in the way of progressing this hobby. And wow, how the world of photography has changed in the intervening years. My experience started with a pre-course Zoom call to assess my knowledge, experience and expectations for the day. This was then put into action on the day itself. A great mix of tuition, introductions to the new technologies, practical guidance - but most importantly- taking lots and lots of photos with Mike kindly critiquing the finished results. I left with a new-found enthusiasm for (digital) photography, a commitment to get out there with a camera and a desire to learn more, which means I will be taking additional courses with Mike. Highly recommended

Hamish and I spent a fantastic first day in October as part of our 2 day photography course with Mike. His knowledge and passion for photography is infectious and the mixture of theory and practice meant that we could apply our learning and then see the results on Mike's monitor and use Lightroom to get the best result. Getting out into Mike's beautiful garden and then into the countryside on his doorstep offered plenty of inspiration! Mike was supportive throughout and on hand to help to frame a photograph or alter camera settings to get the best result. We covered a lot of theory and so the aide memoir cards that we went home with are proving very useful as we continue to practice what we learned. We're looking forward to day 2 in the New Year where we will have the opportunity to consolidate and see more of the beautiful Perthshire landscape. Thank you!

Mike's Drone Photography course was fanstastic! I had not even flown a drone before the day of my course so I was an absolute beginner but Mike's calm encouragement, his structured teaching and his encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject was just what I needed to learn the basics and realise that this is something which I would enjoy and which would be very valuable to me. Mike tailored the day to my specific requirements, went at my pace and gave me just the targeted support and encouragement that I needed. His enthusiasm was infectious and the whole day was great fun; in fact my face was probably sore by the end given the amount of smiling that I did; flying the drone I was like a child at Christmas ! The course covered both using the drone to take still photographs from angles not otherwise possible (not always aerial; sometimes just floating above water where you could never stand) as well as video and the fact that day was spent out and about in the dramatic countryside of highland Perthshire was just the icing on the cake. This truly was a real 5 star experience. Many thanks, Mike, for a wonderful day, for giving me some valuable new skills and the confidence to put them into practice on my own.

I had a marvellous experience with Mike Hay Photography enjoying a new activity - photography! Mike is the perfect instructor, especially for me as a beginner. Discover photography with a great teacher! An excellent course run by Mike; the passion he has for photography and for Highland Perthshire is inspiring. Having felt nervous about showing some of the very basic photographs I had already taken, Mike immediately put me at ease and was very encouraging. I have learnt so much about composition and use the many techniques Mike taught me in every photograph I now take!

As an enthusiastic ‘happy snapper’ I wanted to take better quality photographs, and begin to build my own portfolio - particularly landscapes in spectacular scenery. The session was fun, especially taking pictures, evaluating them and practising again. Mike was very welcoming, open and friendly and made me feel comfortable with something I've never had proper lessons in before, it was personal, not like a teacher. I learned ways to use the digital camera, how to better compose pictures, thinking whether my photo looks natural, and having patience to get the right photo.

I thought your approach was very comprehensive given the time frame we had; we covered theory, technique, technical details and practical use, in enough detail to see and feel the difference when shooting and reviewing 'before' and 'after' photographs - that was the best part for me as it showed immediate progress and was confidence boosting. Evidently you really know your subject, you were encouraging and supportive, not intimidating, stepping in with helpful pointers and ideas whilst still giving space for them to explore and have fun taking pictures. The beautiful setting was a bonus.
