The best camera…

Hi to everyone in the Mike Hay Photography team!

I was driving back from Perth to home near Aberfeldy earlier this week and was reminded of what the best camera is for taking a photograph…it’s the one you have with you when you want to take the shot! See the gallery at the bottom to see what I took 💐🫐🐝🦋🍄🏞️💐

My wife and I stopped to walk the dogs at Griffin Forest near Aberfeldy and headed out along the track into the hills. What a feast of photography opportunities we had over the next hour or so 😃📷

At the end of the track we came across some unusually coloured Common Eyebright…I’m used to seeing these tiny 3-4mm flowers in white but hadn’t seen purple before. Walking back the way we had come we saw some red berries that looked like blueberries…turns out they were a part of the blueberry family called Lingonberries.

As we returned to the hill back to the car my wife spotted a large bunch of bright yellow ragwort…poisonous to grazing animals so it is often removed as a weed but where it doesn’t pose a threat to wildlife it is a vital part of the ecosystem for our butterflies and bees. There were half a dozen bumble bees and over twenty butterflies (Peacock, Red Admiral and Comma) swarming all over it. Then, on the way down the hill, a flash of red caught my wife’s eye in the forest to the side…and I found some immaculate bright red soup plate sized mushrooms.

Then, to cap off the amazing walk, I went to the nearby Loch Na Creige to capture a moody black and white landscape and a final macro of purple heather, wonderfully in bloom at this time of year.

Keep looking and you can find photographic opportunities everywhere!

Bringing you back to where I started this Blog…the best camera to take a photo is the one you have with you. I didn’t have my Canon R5 or any of my other cameras with all their macro lenses…I had my iPhone 14 Pro Max in my back pocket and all of these photos were taken with it. Of course, you don’t need the latest smartphone to be able to take amazing photos like these …it’s mostly about good composition but you can also use clip on external lenses to get really close to your subject. On my smartphone photography course I will show you how to use these lenses to great effect and we’ll cover loads and loads of composition rules to help you take that step towards being the best photographer you can be using just the phone in your pocket!
